The music was originally issued under the name ‘Cantique de Noel’ and was set to a French poem called ‘Minuit, chrétiens’ (Midnight, Christians). Adam Adolphe was a composer and music critic from France who specialized in operas and ballets. ‘O Holy Night’ is one of his most well-known pieces, alongside the opera Giselle (1841).

The song Silent Night was Originally composed in German in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber with lyrics by Joseph Mohr, ‘Stille Nacht’ was translated to English in 1859. The carol was sung simultaneously by English and German troops during the 1914 Christmas ceasefire during World War I.

The carol “Silent Night” has a lovely backstory. The song is said to have been played for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818, barely a few hours after it was written. Because his church’s organ was broken, Austrian priest Joseph Mohr was in desperate need of music for the midnight service which led to the composing of the Christmas song silent night.


3. Hark The Herald Angels Sing

Theologically, most of the carols we sing every christmas have a long history unknown to many of us, and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!” is no exception. It was written by Charles Wesley, a Methodist preacher and hymn writer from England. With the opening line “Hark, how the welkin (heaven) rings,” the poem first published in Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739.

George Whitefield who is Wesley’s student and ultimately a partner, added some paragraphs to the carol he added a text into the song we know today, he added the expression “newborn King”.
